Makes a great gift for your favorite fan!After watching college football for many, many years, there is one truth that remains to hold true; running the ball and stopping the run will win a great deal of football games. Each year the best teams in the country have a solid rush offense and an outstanding rush defense. Saturday, four teams stood out to me as being able to run the ball and stop the run: Penn State, Alabama, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
Penn State played lowly Temple who has notoriously found a way to consistently lose at least ten games a year. Even though Temple is tremendously bad, it is still interesting to note that Penn State ran for 303 yards while only giving up 16. It will be intriguing to see if this trend continues into Big 11 play.
Alabama went to Fayetteville, Arkansas to play Bobby Petrinos Arkansas Razorbacks. It is obvious that the Razorbacks are very bad this year, but going into a SEC opponents stadium and rushing for 328 yards while only giving up 92 is quite impressive. If Saban can continue this trend, as he did at LSU for years, Alabama will be the SEC West Champs. That being said, I would imagine that the Auburn and LSU defensive lines will have something to say about that.
Georgia was the preseason #1 and most of the media felt this was the most talented team that Richt has had in Athens. I was skeptical at first but after seeing them fly to Tempe, Arizona and dismantle Arizona State by rushing for 176 yards while only giving up 4, I have been convinced! Four rushing yards for the home team?!? I realize that the PAC-1 (USC) is weak this year, but can we at least get a 5 yard gain on the ground?
When Paul Johnson took the job at Georgia Tech, I knew that the ACC was going to change drastically. I wish that NC State would have been smart enough to hire him a year before he went to Tech, but obviously that did not happen. The SEC is known for having stout defensive lines so it was expected that Mississippi State would at least slow down the Paul Johnson running attack in Atlanta. Nothing could be further from the truth! Georgia Tech ran through the fight Sylvester Crooms like a hot knife through warm butter. The Jackets ran for 438 yards while only giving up 108. After week one I predicted that Tech and Wake would be in the ACC Championship game and I will hold to that statement until the end of the season.
